Writing in the 21st Century

Once upon a time, an author was free to just write. If he or she was good enough, the works the author toiled over would be published and he or she could make a living. Today, if you want to just write, you still can...if you plan on working a full time job on the side. If you want to get published, you're going to need to know how to market yourself too.

Some of this isn't as difficult as you might think. It is relatively easy to get a good following on Twitter, all without buying followers (never buy followers). Facebook is another place you can easily make your own. But you should also invest in your own website. Make a platform that is independent of other sources. As a friend recently reminded me, when Facebook changed the way their newsfeed worked, a lot of people who were making a lot of money there suddenly found themselves bankrupt. So make sure that, while not ignoring those social media locations, you ultimately have your own home that people can find no matter what else happens.

You can keep up with all of this with relative ease. It only really takes about half an hour a day to stay on top of your social media. Although you can also feel free to invest as much time as you want to build it. Just be aware that, as a writer, your writing should come first and your marketing should be second.
